Oasis LIPU Carloforte (284 hecare) was created in 1991 thanks to an agreement between Comune di Carloforte, Provincia di Cagliari and LIPU (italian bird protection society).

The San Pietro Island, of vulcanic origin, is “watched” by the Eleonora's Falcons that every summer nest on the cliffs of the island.

To protect this splendid raptor, which is threatened by poaching and egg-collecting collectionists, the LIPU has created the Oasis with the help of volunteers from the Cagliari section and every year organizes a protection camp since 1981.

To discover and to get to know the area and all its environments, it is possible to participate in the camp, the environmental education and the study of the falcons and not least to participate in the guided visits on the trails equipped with educational panels and to hire canoes to be able to observe the falcons hover over the sea.

The Oasis LIPU Carloforte presents a great variety of natural environments which gives it a unique and wild aspect.

The Oasis is an importante place for resting and nesting for a lot of birdspecies.

The most rare species is the Eleonora's Falcon which reproduces esclusively on the sea cliffs of Mediterranean islands.

Around 100 couples of falcons arrive every summer from Madagascar to nest in the Oasis. From the month of May the cliffs are filled the sound of the chattering of the birds, the courtship fligths, the beating of the prey and the delicate fase of the reproduction of these splendid raptors.

You can also find other species like the Common Kestrel, the Common Buzzard and the Peregrine Falcon.

The very rare Audouin's Gull, with its particular corall red beak also hovers over the clear blue sea, meanwhile the Common Shag, posistioned on a cliff ready to fish, cathes the attention with its funny behaviour.

Between the impenetrable and intricate shrub of the Maquis shrubland a great variety of Passerines find their refuge: the Sardinian Warbler, the Dartford Warbler, the Marmora's Warbler and the Subalpine Warbler.

On the sunny cliffs it is easy to hear the melodious and warbled song of the Blue Rock Trush.
